First-Time Shooter's Guide
What to Expect at Your First Firearms Training
Your first firearms training session can feel intimidating — but it doesn't have to be. Roughly half of our clients at Seraph Tactical are complete beginners who have never touched a gun before. This guide walks you through exactly what to expect, how to prepare, and why professional training is the safest way to start.
Common Fears (And Why They're Normal)
If you're nervous, you're in good company. Here are the most common concerns first-time shooters share — and the truth behind each one:
“I'm afraid of guns.”
A healthy respect for firearms is actually ideal. It means you'll take safety seriously. Your instructor will show you exactly how to handle a firearm safely before you ever load a round.
“What if I'm terrible at it?”
Everyone starts somewhere. Your first session isn't about being accurate — it's about learning safe handling and basic mechanics. Most beginners are surprised at how quickly they improve with proper instruction.
“Will people judge me for not knowing anything?”
A good instructor specializes in teaching beginners and will never make you feel embarrassed. Individual training means it's just you and your instructor — no audience, no pressure.
What Happens During Your First Session
Safety Briefing (30 min)
Every session starts with a thorough safety briefing. You'll learn the four fundamental rules of firearm safety, how the range works, and emergency procedures. Your instructor will ensure you understand each rule before proceeding.
Firearm Familiarization (30 min)
Before loading any ammunition, you'll learn the parts of the firearm, how it operates, how to hold it properly (grip and stance), and how to load and unload it safely. This is done with an unloaded firearm so you can focus on mechanics.
Dry Fire Practice (20 min)
Dry fire (practicing without ammunition) lets you practice trigger control and sight alignment without recoil or noise. This builds the neural pathways for proper shooting technique and is used by professionals at every level.
Live Fire — First Shots (60+ min)
Now the exciting part. Your instructor will be right next to you, guiding you through each shot. You'll start at close range (3-7 yards) and focus on the fundamentals. Don't worry about accuracy — focus on safety and mechanics. You'll be surprised how natural it feels after the first few rounds.
Skills Development (remaining time)
As you get comfortable, your instructor will introduce new skills: shooting at different distances, improving accuracy, proper reloading technique, and more. The pace is entirely up to you.
Debrief & Next Steps (15 min)
Your session ends with a debrief: what you did well, areas to practice, and recommendations for your next session. Your instructor will help you plan your training progression.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to own a gun to take firearms training?
No. Most professional instructors, including Seraph Tactical, offer rental firearms for training sessions. This is actually a great approach for beginners — you can try different firearms before committing to a purchase.
Is firearms training safe for complete beginners?
Yes. Professional firearms training is one of the safest activities you can do because safety is the number one priority. A qualified instructor will walk you through every safety rule before you ever touch a firearm, and will be at your side throughout the entire session.
How much does a first-time shooting lesson cost?
Costs vary by instructor and format. At Seraph Tactical, individual training starts at $500 for a half day (4 hours) of personalized one-on-one instruction. Group classes can be more affordable per person. The investment covers professional instruction, safety oversight, and curriculum tailored to your level.
What should I wear to firearms training?
Wear comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing. Closed-toe shoes are required (no sandals). Long pants are recommended. Avoid low-cut or V-neck tops, as hot brass casings can bounce into clothing. A brimmed hat helps prevent brass from hitting your face.
